:goodman:

So essentially these character designs are nothing more than Sonic the Hedgehog level Original the Characters Do Not Steal?
This is not a sig, it's a Sandwich.

So, like, Tenchi Masaki is in another character designer's world.
A second harem doesn't seem so bad, eh?
I mean, good for Tenchi. More girls, more girls!!!

No thank you. The important thing are the familiar distinctive and compelling characters, not these bland, generic stand-ins with nothing to do with the original.

I think you missed the point. While the designs are somewhat unique, they borrow heavily from the artists previous works, which is why we are talking about their range as a designer. It's as if an architect could only design pyramids for a living; the pyramids might have different feels but they are at the end of the day the same thing.

I know the point; I just missed the original TM!

Anyway. . .

To find resemblances in the artist's previous work doesn't necessarily show the artist's range. The artist's limits aren't that obvious. It seems as though here, in this case, the character designer is either pretty damn lazy or trying for a self-insertion (with authorization no less), imposing the designer's own ideals onto the epic plot of Tenchi Masaki and his harem. Reviving prior character designs in part—a seemingly uninteresting and redundant act on the designer's behalf with production approval—suggests a quarter-ass adaptation of TM! plus the promotion of Tenchi Masaki and harem times infinity. How upsetting that is, but that's not relevant.

:staredog:

The artist's range can't really be proven. At most, some may claim that the artist is staying within the bounds of design familiarity or he/she is frightened by design novelty and possibilities. Thereby, the artist establishes an artistic identity, known by popularity. It follows that any such range is subjective—a matter of beliefs.

I need to add a caption to this and the situation at hand...

Even Spider-Man knows that Ai Tenchi Muyo is just cut and paste junk from its character designer, therefore making it junk.  Maximum Spider for the Hyper Combo Finish.  KO!
