Title: Nice to meet y'all
Post by: KiddManiac on May 01, 2018, 05:05:02 PM
My name is Kidd, and if anyone here has met me before, it's probably from a convention. I work as part of a group called Vitamin H, and I do a panel called "Tenchi Muyo! Madness", which I've gotten to perform at around a dozen different cons.

That said, while I know a hell of a lot more about Tenchi than I did five years ago, I'm by no means an expert, and am hoping to cure my relative cluelessness. I'm here to meet other Tenchi fans, swap theories, and ask all kinds of dumb questions like "What the heck is bionic enhancement?", "Who were those gals from OVA4?" and "Will we ever learn what the hell broke Mihoshi???"

In fact, I guess I'll start my time here with a question:

Where the heck do I start? Is there a recommended reading list/order? Should I just start over from the very first OVA? What do?

Greetings if it's easier for you we have a discord as well, other wise start with the GXP translations by Fap.

Also what cons do you go to?

Quick question: Is it necessary to watch much of the GXP anime before diving into the novels? I know the novels were written as MK's real vision for the story, but is it like FMA Brotherhood where they assume you've already seen the other version, or can I just start with the books?

I mainly work in Texas, but sometimes I get to travel out of state. My next few cons're gonna be Anime St Louis, Anime Blues, A-Kon, AkaiCon and San Japan. And probably something else I've forgotten about.

Watching the anime helps a lot, the novels do retcon some things though.

answer one:
GXP3:

"What is Bio-Enhancement ...?" erma said standing in front of a diagram of a body on the wall and pointing a pointing stick at it.
"Bio-Enhancement is a process that reconstruct your body using a nanomachines, it increases your physical strength, exercise capacity, endurance and resilience . it also dramatically improves and extends the physical life the person who undergoes it by increasing the number of regeneration of the cells.

answer two
OVA 4:

this one is a bit harder to answer but

Nobu-kun's parent's died when he was young - one of those three girls

OVA 2: bye grandma - tenchi to kei,

Yosho: Yosho had 3 daughters with kasumi

Tenchi 101: the onsen lady is tenchi's great aunt.

OVA 4 again: Oh Akie your still alive?
also OVA 4: Mizune your probably the most qualified your the king of jurai's great grand daughter.
also OVA 4: kei refers to akie as onee-chan

so... kei is akie's sister, they are yosho's two daughters with kasumi, nobuyuki's mother was the third. judging from tenchi calling kei his maternal grandmother in ova 2 it's likely she adopted nobuyuki when his parents died.
fuku otoka or mizune never refer to nobu by brotherly honorifics but they were concerned for him as he grew up  and they refer to his dead parent's as Nobu-kun's parent's not "our parent's" so they are not from his original immediate family.

When mizune see's akie she and the others do not use motherly honorifics for her or any familial honorifics for her actually and mizune is straight up like when the fuck are you going to die you old biddie to her. so... their mom is probably not akie the onsen lady.

they are probably kei's daughter and we know their her daughters because........... she is azusa's great granddaughter, yosho was his son, kei is his granddaughter and that makes her either kei's daughter or akie and they sure as hell aren't akie's daughters.

so their akie's daughter and nobu's cousins who became like his sisters when his family died.

also kasumi is either  nobu's actual sister, or another one of kei's daughter but judging on her obviously relatively young age (young enough to marry a pure earthling and have his taro... and young enough to not have that many kids.)

I'm assuming that fuka otoka and mizune are sisters... they seem like it but it's never confirmed.

Tsukiko is kiriko's and kai's mother and clearly one of the youngest people in the village... who is her mother? no one knows! she may also be nobu's sister or may not it's not clear but it seems highly likely because of her being called aunt tsukiko and because her kids and tenchi played together often as kids

thank you for coming to my ted talk.

answer 3:

GXP3:

an old detective and a young detective were talking to each other in the crowd about seina.

the detective Miyasu said to the other person:

" It's been a while since I was a freshman, since my senpai's head was blown off by a space pirate... ... ... .... since I fell in love with her, and worshiped her from a close distance hasn't it..."

a doctor secretly suppressed mihoshi's probability bias and she was shoved deep into the special ops section of the military at a young age leading to immense mental stress and this all culminated with her having her brain shot out of her head causing massive psychological trauma that left her a vegetable even after her brain was restored, so her bow helps suppress her memories of having her brain blown out.

also, I'd say watch both because I do tend to get lazy when retracing the anime but you can enjoy them separately there very different in tone and in the direction they go in even though GXP the novels hit all the same major plot points. but without it you should be able to still enjoy the novels... at least up till volume 6 I am getting lazy past 6 because the first half of 7 and 8 were the weakest parts of the tv show and are the pretty much the same in the novels just slightly expanded and mellowed out with less of the obnoxious filler nabeshin wrote in

However I actually annotate the novels so you can read and then watch the corresponding episode to compare

also I'm based in houston, I occasionally go to san-japan but it's been a few years.
