The Masaki Family has a long history in Japan. It had existed as a family of aristocrats before Azusa Masaki Jurai had arrived on Jurai.  The extent of the family's power is unknown. It seems that the Masaki Family prefers to remain in the background of Japanese poltical affairs.  The Family may have ruled a daiymo duirng the Edo Period. At one time, it had a large estate.  Most of the large estate has likely been set aside for a large nature preserve.

The Family does a few branches.  Nobuyuki and Kiriko are from two of the branches.  Some members of the Masaki are likely members of the Upper Class in Japan and very wealthy.

Katsuhito had told Tenchi about how the young menbers of the Family do after they come of age. Most of the young members  go into space.  Most of those who go into space would return to Earth after staying in space for many decades.

If the Masaki Family is the most powerful family in Japan, Tenchi is likely aware of his family's power and influence.   It islikely that the Masaki does its best to avoid abusing its power and influence.  A few governmental officals are aware of the Family's links to Jurai.

Wait, where does it say that they are from the aristocracy of Japan? As far as I know, they were no more than a family of priests. Is the aristocracy thing known or just some kind of assumption?

A male member of an aristrcratic family can be a Shinto priest. I have to assumed that the Masaki family had pretended to be a minor aristocratic family.  Only Samuri and Aristocratic families have own large estates.  Sometime before the Meiji Period, the Masaki family had own and control over a very large estate.  Most of the former estate seems to have been turn into  a large nature preserve.  The Masaki Shine is located in what seems to be  a nature preserve.

The Masaki Family is the most powerful family in Japan.  It is careful not to abuse its power and influence.  The Family was able to use is influence to cover up the incidents involving Tenchi's school and the Seto Ohashi Bridge.   The Family seems to prefer  to remain in the background of Japanese national and political affairs.

If they are from the aristocracy, then how long have they been of that status? Does it include the Masaki clan descended from the 1st Emperor's sister? If so, are there indications of whether Funado came from this nobility as well?

The power status of the Masaki  Family is strictly in the OVA anime series. In the OVA series, the Masaki Family just  seems to be one of Japan's most powerful families.  The location of where the Masaki Family Shrine is located in  was likely  part of a large estate which the Masaki Family had once own.  Sometime during the Meiji Period, most of the estate was transform into a large nature preserve.

The fact of the Masaki Family having a large estate is a clue that it was once a member of the aristrocracy. Only major Samuri and Aristrocratic families have large estates in Feudal Japan.  The Masaki Family seems to be contempt to remain mostly in the background of Japanese political affairs.  Yet during Feudal Japan, the Masaki Family seem to have a lot of allies as well as its share of enemies.

The Masaki is one of Japan's oldest families. The Family does have some  members who are part of the upper class. The Family seems to want  to be considered one of Japan's most powerful families.  The Masaki Family is well aware of  being Japan's most powerful family.  So, it does its best to not to abuse its power and influence.
