I haven't seen much of Tenchi universe (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=rel&aid=409) to be honest but I remember watching some OVA a long time ago.. I don't recall though if it was VHS or Laserdisc. Anyways, I have several Funimation DVDs unopened and fansubs unwatched, but do plan to get back into it, so here I am

Welcome. I recommend watching OVA 1+2 first. Then OVA 3. Then GXP. And the Seikishi Monogatari. And all of it with Japanese language and English subtitles. If you wish you can watch Tenchi Muyo in Love 1 afterwards, but it has nothing to do with the main continuity.
Cool, thanks. Hah, I guess the English dubs aren't great huh. Also the Seikishi Monogatari OVAs seems kinda distinct. Can that be watched alone or even first?

Seikishi can be watched anytime, although some references might be missed, it's nothing major imo.
Same with GXP. It actually came out before OAV3 but I don't think the series order is overimportant there.
