I've still never tried Tenchi in Tokyo. One of these days I really need to sit down and start watching through some of the non-Kajishima shows.

I haven't watched it in 20 years. what I remember is that the girls were absolutely at their most irritating, illogical, and stupid.... and the dumb-as-hell Ryo-Ohki mecha.
This was still fun to watch because they really lean into those properties and make it into a gag strip with 4-koma sensibilities.

It kinda makes me want to watch the show... mainly because Sakuya is so fun.... but if IIRC, the only reason she's fun in this is that she's completely out-of-character.

She is completely out of character here, yes.

I really enjoyed Tenchi in Tokyo. I know it's very "monster of the week" in the beginning, and can get silly (especially with some of the super deformation art style used at certain times), but I liked the different take on their relationships. "Ryoko's Big Date", "Carnival", and the final two episodes we highlights for me - there are some very heart wrenching moments in those. I'm a fan of the Tenchi dubs in general, and I think this was when they were at their peak (voice cast changes aside).

It was years later that I found out about the Omake Special, and it turned out to be a real treat. I only wish it were included on the US DVD releases, even if it was only subbed (a dub would've been great though!)

Sakuya is not out-of-character from the standpoint that her originator / puppeteer (if the level of control was even that) gave zero mallards about the populace because of how she was imprisoned.
