Inou Battle and Chaika are in the same neighborhood. If it wasn't for that original the ending do not steal I think Chaika would have been better.

For those who don't know the Manabi Line:

http://anime.stackexchange.com/questions/9238/is-the-manabi-line-a-correct-way-for-estimating-anime-profit-loss
Quote
QuoteReading up on anime sales, I came across the term 'Manabi Line', which is said to be the amount of DVD sales that an anime needs to break even. The article in question quoted it to be about 2,899 sales.

Seemingly, the figure is based off of the amount of sales that the anime 'Manabi Straight' made, and barely broke even.

This seems to be a loose metric.  But another post on that link indicates any sales below 4 thousand units will be a fail of varying degress and over 6k will be success with a neutral zone in between.

Quote-Less than 1000: Complete failure for late night anime, but is common among mainstream/daytime anime, which rely on other methods to produce revenue such as ratings and merchandising. Examples of this would be Naruto, Bleach, OP, Fairy Tale, Detective Conan, and most noitaminA slot anime.

-1000-2000: Pretty much same as above. Some examples of recent late night anime that bombed like this would be LOLH, B Gata H Kei, and Ookami-san.

-2000-3000: Still a failure, but the show has at least some fans but didn't sale well for various reasons, whether they be not enough hype, relatively boring plot, or too :deep:. Some recent examples would be Occult Gakuin, Shin Koihime Musou, and UraBoku.

-3000-4000: This is around break even point for most anime, or as 2ch calls it, the Manabi line. It's not exactly a failure, since no money was lost, but it's not successful or a hit either, since no money was made. An example of this would be Arakawa Under the Bridge and Ichiban Ushiro.

-4000-5000: This is around where you start to see profit being made. Anime that sale in this area aren't what you would call hits, but it's still a decent accomplishment for late night anime. Recent examples are Ikkitousen Xtreme Xecutor and Mayoi Neko Overrun. An older one is all seasons of Zero no Tsukaima.

-5000-6000: This is where some of the more prominent anime among the niche market sale. By that, I mean the more memorable titles of a year. They aren't exactly hits in the sense that they're known among outside of otaku circles, but within them they're common names. Recent examples are Motto To LOVE-Ru, Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls, Amagami SS, and Kissxsis here.

-6000-7000: Very good for late night anime. Once again, not hits, but they're doing very well and are moderately popular among the niche market of otaku. This is still within the realm of the 5000-6000 area. Here you have your Seitokai Yakuindomo, BakaTest, and Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~.

-7000-8000: This is where you start to go from being niche within a niche to being broadly popular within the otaku niche. Could be considered a hit among otaku, although this is a sort of gray area in the the sense most anime don't sale exactly in this range, they're either with the 5000-7000 range or skip into double digits. The only anime that comes to my mind immediately that sales in this range are Katanagatari and HOTD.

-8000-10000: This is where you start to see the most memorable anime over years sale, extremely good for late night anime and a mile stone. Still a bit hesitant to call series in this area hits, but their at least extremely successful. The first DARKER THAN BLACK and Sengoku BASARA seasons sold in this area.

-10000-12000: Where you start to see anime staple marks at. These are the series that even people who aren't otaku will at least have seen or heard of somewhere. This are is ambiguous in the sense that stuff that sales higher initially end up here from sales tapering off a bit. Anime in this are usually have initial sales of around 15000-16000 or higher. Stuff like Strike Witches, Durarara!!, and the first season of Toaru Majutsu no Index end up here after the first few volumes. Toradora! and both seasons of Shakugan no Shana sold around this area. DARKER THAN BLACK: Ryuusei no Gemini also sold here.

-12000-15000: Most anime that end up in the 10000-12000 range overall start out selling around here. As stated above, first season of Index and both seasons of Strike Witches started out here. First season of Hakuouki and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood also sale around this range. Sengoku BASARA Two sales in this area.

-15000-20000: Pretty much same as above.

-20000-30000: Durarara and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood started out in this area but tapered off later on. This area is ambiguous in the sense that the only anime that consistently stay in this area over every volume are heavily otaku supported. Still, some of the most popular anime sales around here. Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, Azumanga Daioh, and Fate/stay night are the only anime I can think of that consistently sold in this range.

-30000-50000: Godly and legendary. This is where the household name or super popular otaku anime sale. First Fullmetal Alchemist, Macross Frontier, Code Geass, Gundam 00, Haruhi, Angel Beats!, Lucky Star!, K-ON!, etc.

-50000-80000: Nearly impossible. Only TV series that have sold here are Bakemonogatari, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, and Gundam SEED.

I'll be interested in how Disc 2 sales keep up.  The interest for Ai Tenchi Muyo (愛・天地無用) in google trends collapsed right after the first week of episodes, perhaps reflecting ratings.  I would suppose people buying the discs know what they are getting into, though.

Just great. Negishi has probably permanently ruined our chances of seeing any real Tenchi series, such as ones based on Mister Kajishima's books.

Are the numbers of sales accurate? Eh? Doesn't seem that bad for  愛・天地無用!, considering 愛・天地無用!'s characters and story development over given time per episode.  愛・天地無用!BDs/DVDs aren't worth buying, I'd think, and yet some are buying them. I find that somewhat odd. . .

Ya pretty much only the hardcore fans are buying, Personally I don't mind SOME of the merchandise for the show.

Yeah, I'll say, look at the total views each video got on Nicovideo. Viewer interest started strong and after three weeks it lost 70-80% of the audience. And what's really bad is when you look at how little interest the recap episodes generated. You can pretty much guarantee that optical media sales of volume 2 & 3 will parallel volume 1, cause the guys buying it are only doing so out of obligation and compulsive behavior. Elevens are practically conditioned to buy anything they glance at.

Yea it's pretty bad. If I remember correctly, OVA 3 an GXP were able to do about 6000ish a volume.
To give you a off topic example, xbox related products sell similar numbers to Ai and it's considered an abomination over there cause of that.

Looks like we have our confirmation that Negishi and AIC just screwed the fans AND Kajishima... in my book, anyone involved with the creation of Ai Tenchi deserves to be booed out of whatever building they walk into from now on.  The fact that they took the anniversary season ball and dropped it immediately (Which as I have said several times, no other company has done in any other recent anniversary season) is just salt in the wound at this point because we know now that the damage has been done.  :swave:

While I can't find anymore, the numbers I saw placed volume 1-6 of OVA3 around 19-20K each and volume 7 at 10K.

However I did find this:

http://www38.atwiki.jp/uri-archive/pages/232.html
(UNIVERSE???)
2003 1 - 17,223 - - --,--- - --,--- 17,223 *7 天地無用!魎皇鬼 第三期

And the GXP novels seem to be doing better than I expected. Bumped into a post that implied novel #10 did 17K. No wonder Kajishima keeps pumping them out.

Has there been any news on how Disc2 sold?  I don't see any amazon reviews on the bluray after all the fake reviews on the first disc....

If that's just Bluray sales, it's dropped a little but mostly holding steady albeit low number.

FINAL SALES FIGURES:

http://www.someanithing.com/3092

Ai Tenchi Muyou! v3
Bluray 1,134
DVD (?)*

*Not on the main list, but numbers can be found on the extended list).

Series Bluray/DVD Combined Average according to source: 1,430 units.  That includes sales past the first week up to now (Vol1 being on sale for 8 weeks already, for instance).

Observations:
None of the Ai Tenchi Muyo Volumes, including 3, placed in the BDTop100 after their first week.  This slump in sales is natural when months and months of pre-orders is considered in first week sales.  Weekly sales typically have to exceed around the 200-300ish range for Blurays to be in the anime Top 100.

For Ai Tenchi Muyo in general, sales of Blu outpaced DVD by around 4 to 1.  This ratio isn't always the case for other titles.  For instance, on the link, Omoide no Marnie sold more DVDs than BD (12,094 vs 9,267) in it's first week.  This suggests Ai Tenchi captured what little it did of the Otaku market and almost no casual viewers.

For all 3 Volumes combined:
*"Box Office" take so far at: $195,409

(5,450 yen average Amazon price of 3 volumes = $45.55 right now.  $45.55 x 1,430 units x 3 volumes.)

This is already a bit overstated roughly by $7,500 because DVDs were 1,000 yen less, or ~$8/unit.  Because the average sales up to now is 1,430 units per volume, and all openings were steady at around 1300ish combined BD/DVD sales, it suggests volume 3 will see around 100-150 more units after the initial week by the time it's hits volume 1's current age (2 months).  That might be $6,800 - canceling the previous discrepancy out.  Very, very generously, AiTM may take $20,000 more than the stated figure home altogether if it can somehow convice 150 more fans to buy all 3 volumes in the months ahead.

I will conclude that AIC can't live as a company on that type of money.  I have no clue what it will net from this.  Considering whatever the end retailer takes, DVD/BD costs, voice talent costs, etc.  Even merchandise sales first need an audience that wants to buy said items.  For whatever reason, the show bombed unless Tokyo MX paid them very well.  All the subsequent TV airings on other channels (regions) have been midnight or later, according to Japanese wikipedia.  One channel started airing it less than its 2 weeks it finish its initial run at 2/2:30 in the morning.

To put things in view, Okayama got suckered into paying $165,000 in "advertising expenses" for this.
