QuoteHidetoshi Takahashi (episode director on Sword Art Online II, Magi) steps up to helm the AIC production with Hideki Shirane (Tenchi Muyo! GXP and War on Geminar) writing series composition and screenplay, plus Oneechan ga Kita (Oneechan ga Kita) on character designs.

I'm starting to wonder how much actual control Kajishima-sensei has over this thing.

It wouldn't get made without him. I suspect the general story and possibly storyboards may come from Kajishima-sensei, but the actual scripts will be from someone else. This is how it has been since OVA 1, only there, Kajishima-sensei didn't have as much say so. After OVA 1 where Hayashi-sensei and Hasegawa-sensei departed the franchise, Kajishima-sensei pretty much had control (within the bounds of AIC and whomever ponying up the money to pay for the production).

Sometimes the original creator can really benefit from being on a leash, they need someone to tell them what should be left on the cutting room floor. I quite liked OVA3 but I agree it reminded me of Quentin Tarantino's recent movies, in that it was very self indulgent with the number of new characters.

I agree that an original creator can benefit from being on a leash. I think that's why OVA 1 is the best of the lot in terms of structure. Hayashi-sensei forced Kajishima-sensei to change certain things. From what I understand, the Royal tree concept came from Hayashi-sensei (I could be wrong there, but this is what I've long been told). However, I'm also told that Hayshi-sensei didn't want Washu introduced in OVA 1 as there were already too many characters that were introduced there. Supposedly, Kajishima-sensei really fought hard to get Washu in. I suppose by that time, Hayashi was weary and just let him have it. ;-)

In terms of OVA 3, the number of characters there were mainly for Japanese fans. With the Shin Tenchi Muyo novels having many of the characters in them, to say nothing of the doujinshi and the GXP anime, Japanese fans (and fans in the West like myself) wanted to see these characters like Seto and such in OVA 3. The problem with that series is that it isn't structured properly. There's a lot of "day in the life of Tenchi's household" stuff, but too much time is wasted for a six episode series (as originally done, since the 7th episode was approved at the end of OVA 3). And that says nothing of the crime of not letting us see Aeka and Ryoko kick arse, and only showing Sasami's battle as a terrible flashback.

If OVA 4 follows the -If- doujinshi for some of its stories, then the number of characters are going to be through the roof. ;-)

Huh.  So that's why WoG freakin' rocked and GXP was kinda meh.

Yeah.  Nabeshin was involved in some capacity, which messed up certain elements of the story.  It's the reason why Kajishima did the GXP novels recently.  Antvasima can tell you more about it, he knows what happened there moreso than I do.

That's also why Kajishima-sensei directed episode 17 of GXP. He had to make sure that the episode stayed pure so it wouldn't conflict with OVA 3, which was being released after GXP, but was set prior to GXP. (Rumor has it that the NB character is shown in the doghouse as a not so subtle joke of how Kajishima-sensei was displeased with the changed Nabeshin made to his story, including the insertion of NB).

Well, as far as I remember, basically Nabeshin stated in an interview that he would try to turn over the tables, and spit out Kajishima's massive vision in easily digestible chunks, and in practice turned much of GXP into off-topic unfunny sex & poop gags.

Its most saving grace was that Mister Kajishima's beautiful designs remained, but he was so offended by his creative vision being thoroughly dismantled that he spent years writing over a dozen books about a new canon that reflected his original intentions.

Which is why I'd love to see GXP get a new series based off of the light novels. I kinda doubt that happens since I don't get the sense that Kajishima-sensei wants that to happen (ditto his Shin Tenchi Muyo novels).

While OVA 4 is likely going to have 7 epsiodes,  I do like the ideal of OVA 4 being a sequel to the Ryo-Ohki series.  As a sequel, OVA 4 can have a couple of episodes which focus primary on Mihoshi's parents Nakita and Mitoto and Funaho and Misaki visiting the Earth. The two separate episodes are not true fillers.  They can help to describe the series' arc and plot as well as include some humor. The exact number of episodes for OVA 4 as a sequel can be 13. OVA 4 can take place after the events of GXP.

I will have to wait until fall 2016 or possibility another date. Like i have stated before,  I am stlll only expecting Sasami to be going to school. Her main reason for going to school is for social reasons.  A  tentative name for Sasami's   best friend can be Misao Amano.

Vol. 1's announcement is on the site page as well: http://tenchimuyo4th.com/contents/hp0009/index00050000.html

Some dates finally...time to get back to action....

I'll get the lube.

Stoked that we finally have dates!  Also, something I noticed is that volume 4 releases in time for the exact timeframe of the Tenchi Muyo 25th Anniversary in 2017.

-OVA 1 episode 1.  September 1992.  (Someone know the exact date?)
-OVA 4 volume 4.  August 30, 2017.

Knew that this was going to be an anniversary season!  It is a bit of a wait until volume 1, but I betcha the timing was so that OVA 4 was the big anniversary season.  Smart move by AIC and Kajishima, and I applaud them for it.  All I've got to say about November is, well... :getin:
"I believe classic Mewtwo shot first, and I will die on that hill." -Me, at some point. Probably.

So it has only 4 episodes or just the first 4 episodes has a date so far?
