Doing a little digging on this, and apparently you guys aren't the only ones to bring up comparisons. The creator of the show revealed a diagram of her favorite characters with Ryoko being directly in the middle -- some other notable mentions being like Kusanagi from GitS and Ed from Cowboy Bebop.
With that in mind you can expect some of these characters on the show to feel familiar.

catroon network was ok with doing it for mighty magiswords and steve u. i its safe to say the animation industry will go no where in the next 10 years if they dont let them wholesale rip off 90's anime
