Title: Translation Fund and Releases
Post by: Dr.Soviet on January 19, 2014, 01:18:39 AM
We are setting up a fund for the Translations and are using Paypal.

PM ME ABOUT ANY MONEY YOU WANNA DONATE

If you do not wish to use paypal but do wish to donate please PM me.

Lastly the prices seem pretty fair, The latest Tenchi Ban doujin at the time of this writing is 13.12 and comes out to $30 just to give you all an idea of how this might add up pretty quickly.
As of right now we are getting the Kajishima Doujin circle translated first, However we are only going to have doujins translated when we actually have money on hand and are only going to pay for them one at a time.

Has no one chipped in since 2014? I am very interested in seeing some of the later Tenchi Ban Doujin translated as it seems to have more ISK backstory.

Have those doujin been sent to your translator for a price quote and if so how much?

Ive been using my own money as of late to make it happen, also the price depends on the length we usually negotiate before hand with each doujin.

okay, I definitely want to chip in. Ask your guy how much to do all of the outstanding tenchi ban issues and drop me a PM.

I will contribute as much as  can.

Just had an idea. A new digital-only light novel publishing company called J-Novel Club started up a few months ago. Not
only are they legit, but they have gotten several high-profile  properties already translated and published as e-books.

The founder of the company, Sam Pinansky, is a former fan translator who wants to publish English translations of older series, or ones that have flown under the radar of other publishers.

Now, unfortunately you have to become a member to do this, but maybe we can suggest he try getting the rights for the True Tenchi and GXP novels. It's worth a shot. Paninsky is the mod for the forums, so he would see the suggestion directly.

I'll take a look see in to it, better than us trying to do it ourselves.

I doubt they'll be able to get the license from Kadokawa. Kadokawa owns a majority of Yen Press, so unless Yen Press decides to license it I doubt we'll see an official translation of either.

Damn. I didn't think to check who Fujimi Fantasia Bunko was owned by.

Yen Press is one of those publishing companies that grabs the properties that are currently popular and/or have anime adaptations already.  :neg:

What, and they're just sitting on it?

That sort of shit pisses me off - when a company buys up the publishing rights and they do jack shit with it.  No better than copyright trolls. :emot-commissar:

Here are a couple of quotes from the J-Novel Club founder.

QuoteKadokawa has a reputation of eating other companies. That's been its MO for a while. Sometimes they end up operating pretty independently, and sometimes they end up being merged into Kadokawa significantly.
Let me tell you a story about one of these times I know some things about, however it's on the anime side and not the manga/light novel side: Their recent merger with Media Factory.
Media Factory had its own international licensing department for the licensing of anime, but then again so did Kadokawa. So after the merger who would be in charge of the licensing? The answer was for about a year there were two separate windows and they internally argued over who would handle which property, but after a year or two people were fired and/or transferred into other departments and the international licensing department of Media Factory basically disappeared.
Frankly speaking it's hard to operate international licensing departments and takes a lot of specialized man-power. Most smaller publishers would be happy to delegate that work to a larger and more experienced parent company.

QuoteAnd to answer your specific question: Spam all you want, because situations change all the time. What once might be a difficult title to license could be perfectly possible in the future. It all depends on who is making the decisions in Japan and what the pressures on them are. One quarter the pressure could be to make Yen a success story, the next quarter it could be to focus on profit for the headquarters...

I hope that they will pick up the Tenchi GXP novels if Seven Seas does not.
