"to where?"

[Auir]

"A global positioning system. It doesn't always work due to ionosphere and troposphere delays, multi-paths, receiver clock errors, poor satellite orbits, interference from objects, and not enough svisible satellites."

[paladin313]

"Oh, some place trashy."

"Actually, that is not even connected to all that," he said, and then asked Skuld, "You have heard of the Titanic, yes?"

[Auir]

She nodded.

[paladin313]

"okay, can you tell me what happened?"

[Trace Carter]

"trashy how?"

[Auir]

"It struck an iceberg and after 2 hours of water leaking in, it finally sunk."

[paladin313]

"Right," he said, "Now, why were they even near an iceberg field?"

"Well, I'm only thinking of something to do with a vortex."

[Auir]

"Because they miscalculated their location?"

[paladin313]

"Partly, but no one was really trying to keep shipping lanes out.  It was because they could not see the oncoming ice mountain that hurt them the most!  Now, the shipping lanes are farther south, but, many icebergs now have placed on them a device that, if we are drifting too close to the field, and near one, this will detect the transmitters miles before we reach it and correct the course."

[Auir]

She kept listening.

[paladin313]

"This is the reason for that device.  Nowadays, it is almost impossible to get lost on the ocean."

[Auir]

"Unless your device breaks down of course."

[paladin313]

"Well," he said, "That's why we keep this just in case."
      He opened a cabinet and pulled out charts, a pair of clocks, and a sextant.  "These still work just as well as the electronics."

[Auir]

The crowd nodded in acknowledgement.
