"Have you ever seen, these, sweetie?" he said to Skuld.

[Auir]

"I've read about them. Hadn't had the time to see one up close."

[paladin313]

He then spread out the charts, showed her the clocks, and told her how to determine longitude by the clocks, and latitude by the sextant.

[Auir]

"Um, are you sure this won't be holding up the tour?"

[paladin313]

"Oh no," he said, This is part of it.  We like to show the old way of doing it, and even allow someone like you a chance to try it.  It's around noon, so, it's the perfect time for the sextant and clock.  We know it is noon, because the sun is at it's highest point.  The one clock is set to Greenwich Mean Time.  The other can be adjusted to match local time, so we can know the longitude.  The Sextant is a bit more involved, but I am sure you can handle that by your interest in the gadgets on the bridge."

[Auir]

She nodded and listened.

[paladin313]

"Okay, so adjust the second clock to noon, and then use the sextant with the sun to find out where we are on the chart."

[Auir]

She took up the sextant and adjusted it according to the directions and then pointed it at the sun.

[paladin313]

"Okay, once you have it set right, look at the arrow on the curved section on the bottom and show us all where we are."

[Auir]

"Hmm..." she made several looks and looked down at the map. At least she pointed at a location.

"Here."

[paladin313]

The captain and navigator were stunned.  "Well, I'm impressed!  No one has ever pinpointed our location exactly like that, outside of the crew, that is."

[Auir]

"I'm a genius when it comes to these things after all." she said proudly.

[paladin313]

They took them all over: to the galley, crew quarters, how they made fresh water, and so forth.  Finally, they were in engineering.

[Auir]

And here is where Skuld's eyes shined the most.

[paladin313]

He then started to go over the basic aspects of the engine: its stroke and bore, and how fast it could propel the ship, and how it doubled as a power generator for the rest of the vessel.
